Cienega Station

Cienega is the most notorious station on the stage route across Hell's Furnace. Twenty miles west of Redington, it sits amidst a number of meadows of sacaton and saltgrass which are watered by a maze of creeks. Given the abundant water and fodder, it comes as a suprise to many travelers to discover that the station itself is stout stone building well situated for defense.   The histoy of the station is written in its graveyard, which has more than two dozen headstones for soldiers killed in battle with Apaches, as well as station personnel killed by both Apaches and bandits, and a US Army paymaster and his guards who were killed by the station crew who stole $75,000.
