Doubtful Canyon Station

Because Doubtful Canyon is the best available route through the Peloncillo Mountains, it's long been used by Apaches as a place to ambush travellers. Originally called Stein's Peak, the station here was destroyed by Apaches in 1861. A sharp battle on 3 May 1864 between Company I of the 5th California Volunteer Infantry Regiment and around a hundred Apaches inflicted heavy casualties on the natives at the cost of one killed and five wounded soldiers. Since then, raids and ambushes have been infrequent.   The current station is small and defensible. Located forty-two miles to the west of Soldier's Farewell Station, it fills a vital role as a source for fresh horses and reliable water.
