Swiveler's Station
The westernmost stage station in Hell's Furnace, Swiveler's has a rich history. Fifteen miles west of Mission Camp and twenty miles east of Yuma, Swiveler's was a stop on the San Antonio-San Diego mail route even before the Butterfield Stage Company was established. In 1858, it became the site of Arizona's first gold rush and the town of Gila City was established. Thousands of miners swarmed over the area, earning as much as $100 in a day. All of this disappeared in the Great Flood of 1862, which washed the town away. Rather than rebuild it, almost everyone lit off for La Paz, where a new rush was underway. The station remained, being one of the few structures not swept away.
