Tucson
Originally a Mexican garrison town, Tucson remained that way for three years after the Gadsden Purchase was ratified. After the Mexicans finally left in 1856, the United States Army took over the presido. The Apache Wars limited the population growth for several years and the onset of the Civil War put an end to all military protection for the community. After the Civil War, the Arizona territorial capital was moved from Prescott to Tucson and the city's population began to quickly grow. It's now the largest city in the Arizona Territory. The city serves as a hub for the ranching and mining industries in southern Arizona.
