Yuma

The Yuma Crossing is a ferry across the Colorado River that has served as the primary route into Southern California since 1846. The city on the eastern bank was first known as Colorado City and then later as Arizona City, in 1873 the name was changed to Yuma. It's located on a high rise after the first two sites were destroyed when the river flooded.   Perched between the Californian and Sonoran deserts, Yuma does a good business as a supply source for all of southern Arizona. The steamboats that ply the Colorado River from the Gulf of California to the head of the navigable river at Callville, Nevada dock at the Yuma crossing. From there, a person can book passage on the ships that sail around Baja California all the way to San Francisco.   The Territorial prison is located just to the north of town.
