E'ste (EST - AY)

E'ste is a city found on Insula d'Sula, the isle of the sun. It is inhabited by Elfir .

History

E'ste was the first settlement of the Elfir when they first came to Herievend. The Isle of the Sun (The Compass Islands for the humans) was the first land the the Elfir inhabited and used as a base of exploration. It was also here that the Elfir named the lands they found Herievend, the grieving lands.

The Elfir left their ancestral home after they lost all their innate magic, which is why Herievend is called the grieving lands, as the Elfir were grieving for their magic. In E'ste the first magical research institutions were set up to find a solution to the lack of innate magic that they had. They discovered how to summon magical energy to cast spells and incantations, but this kind of magic could not enchant anything, so a delegation of Elfir, known as Ethentir (forest people), crossed the sea to Thorane, one of two continents that make up Herievend and settled there.

Geography

E'ste is built on a horseshoe shaped cliff, with a pair of waterfalls on either side that merge to form the Vidria River. Most of the city is built into the face of the cliff, but some buildings are at the top/bottom of it as well.

Government

E'ste and the Isle of the Sun are governed by a council of Academics, all of which have a designation to handle. There is no limit to the number of people on the council, so the chair keeps adding more as the population grows, meaning that they have run out of table space and have to only invite the senior members. (One of the senior members, Prof. Ida Asteria, head of divination and vision-gathering, has never attended a meeting and hopes to never have to.
The Elfir studying in E'ste use arcane magic as opposed to druidic or vessel magic. Arcane magic differs from those kinds of magic as the energy used to manipulate matter is not stored, but summoned. This means arcane magic users do not need to seek out 'wells' of magic to cast, unlike druidic magic. E'ste Elfir believe vessel magic to be very dangerous and taboo, and druidic magic as weak.
