Ankohouse

Once half the planet was shrouded in permanent darkness, the part of the world with seas needed work to remain travelable. This resulted in the hasty construction of a network of lighthouses. Many were built in a way similar to early lighthouses on Earth with a large fiery brazier shining a light for many miles.
However, some of these lighthouses use a different form of illumination. In the areas lived in primarily by kegani, they took to breeding extra-large anko and using their bulbs as a form of guidance for traveling ships. Through a process of force-feeding an anko various toxic urchins and other strange plants, an anko undergoes a drastic and terrifying transformation.
After the process has started, the anko will be immediately transported to the spot where the ankohouse is to be rooted. It will be placed into a large pool before it balloons to several times its normal size and develops a thick, scarred hide. This has two beneficial side effects. Firstly, the lantern on the anko glows several times brighter than it would otherwise, allowing it it be seen for several miles. Secondly, in this state an anko exists almost mummified, needing very little sustenance and living for decades at a time.
