Isarus (Is-ah-rus)
The Isarus (Plural Isarii) is be most easily described as a flying shark. While solitary in nature, they do tend to remain within a reasonable distance of one another with the majority of the isarii population living within a couple hundred square miles of one another. When they do run into one another in their territory, the result is often a bloody struggle that ends with one severely wounded if not dead.
They reside within the section of the Barrier Mountains that borders along the Golden Sea. Given that they stay within such a specific region of the Barrier Mountains, most people see fit to leave them alone. However, during one week a year, apparently unfretted by the planet no longer turning, all mature isarii will fly out towards an island in the Golden Sea, their apparently breeding ground.
After they mate, their eggs are laid and left unattended with only the strongest isarii surviving. With the eggs being unguarded, some enthusiastic opportunists always try to steal some eggs, but the risk of running into a latecomer isarus is often a good deterrent. In fact, during this one week, known in the Cha'ari language as Shahr'kweh'k, most of the residents living in the path will choose to vacate their homes to stay out of the way of these viscous predators. With few isarii surviving their trip back to the Barrier Mountains, only the strong will survive to continue the species, just as nature intended.
