Manuxet Sea (Man-Oohks-et)

In a place where no sun will rise, there lies a sea located entirely within the continent of Kumari. Unlike the waters surrounding the land, this water is as dark as pitch and smells of oil and bitter salt. Even before the planet stopped rotating, the waters of the Manuxet Sea were cold enough to send a man's soul to Ra in just a few minutes. Despite this, even without having seen the sun in millennia, the sea never freezes over even though it is more than cold enough to freeze solid. All the same, some brave souls will still make the journey across the sea due to its faster travel time compared to going around Kumari.   The sea is the largest inland sea on all of Venus, but despite that, there are very few settlements upon its banks. There are very few fish or edible plants to salvage from the sea and the cold and bitter spray of the sea often outweighs the benefit of living on the water. The single largest settlement upon the sea is the Altar of the Evening, but that temple subsists largely on trade from ships traveling through the sea rather than the sea itself. Its not unusual to see ships passing by the Altar of the Evening semi-regularly as very few ships would risk going through the center of the sea.   The shores are relatively safe to travel, at least as safe as the rest of the waters on Venus, but the center of the Manuxet Sea has developed a reputation for being especially dangerous. The inky black sea reflects no light, making it difficult to navigate as you can't see anything around you. Further more, the further towards the center of the sea you get, the thicker and more viscous the waters get, causing both navigation to slow and the ship to risk capsizing as the thick, oily waves hit the ship with more force than ever before. However, the real reason no one goes to the center isn't because of these reason. Its fear of the deep ones.   Rumored to be scaly, dark humanoids that live in the deepest depths of the Manuxet Sea, many have speculated on their existence, but no one has brought back proof. The few survivors to their alleged attacks have been dismissed as a drowned delusion of a sea sick mad man. They are said to crawl along the sides of the ships when the ships are slowed to a crawl by the waters in the center of the sea. Without a word they slaughter each ship mate, if they don't drown them first. Then, they slink back into the sea, leaving the ship to drift crewless until it crashes along the shore. Then, they return with their prizes to their home, a supposed city beneath the sea, composed entirely of oily black stone.   Still, even with its dangers, the Manuxet Sea is still a much faster route to take than going around Kumari proper, assuming one sticks around the shore. However, that may change, as over the years the thick, curdling waters of the center have been spreading out towards the shore, leaving the safe areas smaller and smaller.
