The Arcanum

The Priests were always focused more on matters of personal growth than any sort of material gain, so it should be no surprise that the mystic arts came more easily to them than the other Atlantean castes. While the greatest amongst them would powerful mages, far more Priests cared about how magic could be used to explore the mysteries of the universe and advance their society as a whole. When they built what they assumed would be their new capital, they also constructed a new building for them to explore the mystic arts, The Arcanum.   Sitting on a cliff overlooking the city port, The Arcanum is not the tallest building in the city, but is technically the highest point. A spiraling tower, The Arcanum extends several stories into the air and several more into the cliff interior. The top floor has no physical roof, but is instead protected by a translucent magical barrier that protects against the physical elements. As such, the top floor existed as an observation platform for stargazing during the long Venus nights.   Though the time when the Arcanum was in full operation was relatively short, they spent the most with their time. Some of the spells and lessons that they learned during their mystic studies remain ingrained in Venus society to this day, such as some of the magicks used to promote crop growth in the Biolabs. Unfortunately, even though the Priests worked relentlessly in their pursuit of knowledge, much of their knowledge is considered lost. It is stored deep in the archive basements of the Arcanum, protected by various magic wards. Even if it were not for that, the time distortion in Mu makes retrieving the tomes even more difficult.   During the last hours of the time distortion, the sorcerers of The Arcanum took it upon themselves to undo the damage they had wrought upon the world. Knowing that their time was very limited, they chose to go with the the option most likely to succeed, no matter the cost. Most of the mages fled the city, but a handful of sorcerers retreated to the outskirts of the city with the Archmage of the Arcanum remaining atop the top floor of The Arcanum.   Once they reached Mu's borders they began to proceed with the ritual just as the sun began to rise over the horizon in it's magically accelerated speed. Twelve hours later, as the sun was beginning to set over the horizon, the spell was completed and the planet returned to its natural speed. Their deed completed, their bodies turned to dust as the wind swept their remains. Though they could not completely undo their disastrous spell, they could contain it within Mu in an unending time loop. Atop The Arcanum, the Archmage remained as he was the catalyst for the spell. He remains there to this day in a transformed state from absorbing both the mages magical energies and the overwhelming power that nearly destroyed the planet.
