The Undercity

In the shadow underneath the city of Maksur Das a new city has grown. A city with no proper name that the descendants of the survivors of Maksur Das have grown to call home. The legs from the city above have all been removed and fashioned into support beams, or most obviously, a bronzed wall surrounding their new lodgings. Though a far cry from their past, these people still maintain themselves citizens of Maksur Das, but in truth, they live in what is called the undercity.   With thousands of tons of metal resting a couple dozen feet above their heads, there is not much room for growth in the city, but they have made due. The buildings are all built to the bottom of the upper city, letting Maksur Das act as a ceiling while the building helps support Maksur Das in the event of a collapse. Each street is barely the width of two people standing side by side and the lack of any sort of street signs or landmarks can make navigating especially difficult for anyone who doesn’t already know the way.   The people in the undercity, while not uncivilized by any means, certainly live in a more tribal manor. While they have a reverence for their ancestors, they do not approach the world in the same manner as they did. Technology is only to be used, not studied, and its use must be a practical one at that. The heat provided by Maksur Das energies provides the city with the warmth it needs to survive. If any of that power is used towards anything deemed frivolous and unnecessary, it could mean that the power may drain that much faster with nothing gained in return. Whether or not the power works this way isn’t actually known to the townsfolk, but they maintain it to be true nonetheless for safety's sake.   Their tribal structure also affects their governance. A hereditary chieftainship has been continued for generations, with the descendants of chief researchers now tacking on leadership roles. Each chieftain maintains control over a specific area, whether it be defense, hunting, agriculture, caring for the young and so on. The only way to possibly achieve one of these positions yourself if you’re not in the family is through marriage, and even then your connection will only run so deep. Currently, this system is working well enough to keep the residents of the undercity safe and well fed.   The citizens of the undercity are at a distinct disadvantage. Every other settlement on the dark side of the planet was established because that location was livable. The undercity was founded because they were stuck there. They live some of the most difficult lives on the planet, living on small game, melted snow, and whatever plants they can manage to grow in the limited space they have under Maksur Das. In spite of, or in fact because of all of this, the people of the undercity are very much like their ancestors. They are survivors.
