Filth Fever

"I'm afraid she caught the fever miss, drank from the bad well at the edge of town. Told her it was tainted, we did, but it musta slipper her mind. No healer about, ya see, we tried to get her to Endwater to see a cleric, but we couldn't quite get there in time. Memorial is next week, if you please..."
 - Lament of a farmer, referring to the loss of his daughter to Filth Fever.

Transmission & Vectors

Ingestion and through bodily fluids

Causes

Usually associated with sewage, or waters tainted by rotting flesh.

Symptoms

A rapid weakening of the infected, along with fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy.

Treatment

While the exact cause of the disease is unknown, it is curable using healing magic such as Lesser restoration or similar spells. In addition, salves that are thought to cure disease such as Blue Cactus Flower Salve or Hebram's Aloe Ointment also seem very effective at curing this ailment.

Prognosis

The disease usually runs it's course within 7 to 12 days.
If the infected person is able to keep warm and hydrated, or receive healing, the fever will likely break by the third or fourth day. IF this is the case, they will likely make a full recovery.
However, if the infected cannot receive healing by the 7th or 8th day, the likelihood of survival becomes very slim. As by this point the infected person is likely dangerously dehydrated and weak.

Prevention

It is thought that avoiding bathing in or drinking tainted water can prevent infection. I naddition, some mages say that boiling drinking water before consumption will also help to prevent becoming ill.
