Dust

Dust is a rare and valuable substance produced by the wings of the Fae in the form of a fine, glittering powder, often silver or gold in colour. It is secreted exclusively when Fae experience profound feelings of love, whether romantic or familial.   Dust is a valuable and delicate substance which has various uses from medical to celebratory. Legitimate uses can include the tossing of dust over newly married couples with the belief that it will bring them luck in their relationship or medicinal use such as aid in the treatment of conditions such as PTSD and severe phobias. However by far its most forbidden use is in the creation of Glitz, an illegal street drug. As such, legal export of Dust from the Kingdom of Kynevyn is tightly controlled, with a complex black market dealing in the trade of the substance.   While Glitz is an intoxicant for most races, Fae are largely immune to its effects. The effects of Dust consumption or inhalation include physical sensations like dilated pupils, tingling, increased body temperature, and a slightly elevated heart rate, along with emotional responses such as euphoria, heightened sensitivity, arousal, and feelings of love and connectedness. These qualities are increased by several orders of magnitude when Dust is distilled into Glitz.

History

The history of Dust is intertwined with Fae culture itself, as the substance is a symbol of the physical manifestation of Fae love itself. This shimmering substance once reached far beyond Kynevyn to become a symbol of love, connection, and unity. Over time, it has been utilized in various ceremonies, such as Bonding Rituals. However, its history took a darker turn when its distillation was perfected, leading to the creation of the street drug Glitz and forever tainting its reputation. Despite this, Dust remains an immensely significant physical manifestation of true, deep love among the Fae, and an important item in some folk traditions across the Known Lands.

Significance

Dust holds immense significance as a symbol of love, unity, and connection. Among the Fae, it is seen as a nearly sacred substance, secreted by the wings of the Fae during moments of profound emotion. Dust plays a central role in many Fae bonding ceremonies and cultural traditions. Its significance goes beyond its physical properties, embodying the essence of deep and genuine feelings. Tokens of affection made from or featuring one's own Dust are not uncommon.   In many other cultures, Dust is thrown over a newly married couple with the belief that it will bring luck to their relationship and strengthen their bond. This belief may be due to the temporary physical effects of Dust on non-Fae races, including heightened arousal, flushed cheeks, and feelings of love and connectedness.   However, the misuse of Dust in the creation of Glitz has tainted its reputation and raised moral questions about its usage and potential for misuse, as well as what responsibility the Fae have to prevent that misuse.
