The gods are slowly dying, though nobody's aware of it yet. Their power is not limitless, they are not all-powerful, yet they act as if they are. They lose a tiny bit of themselves every time they grant magic to a mortal, though the effects of this won't be seen for hundreds of years.   For now, things progress as they always have. This world exists as a backdrop to a series of novels set in a variety of times in the same universe. One is Fieldwork, set in a future where nearly all the gods have died and the world is in a non-magical industrial era. Another is (working title) HKF, a fantasy set before the Fall.
