Fang of Huxenotizhuatli
The Fang of Huxenotizhuatli (Nepemaxaltic: Choponilotli Huxenotizhuatli or Choponilotli Loala Isshuatlipan; also known as the Fang of the Night Serpent) is a legendary obsidian sacrificial dagger found in the Pyramid of Sethenes II. Crafted in Teroa during the First Intermediate Period, this dagger made of rare white obsidian was one of several used to perform human sacrifices by the very first yuan-ti cultists. Imbued with dark power, the Fang is said to have the power to resurrect the ancient dead through blood sacrifice. According to several eschatological texts written by the yuan-ti and others, the blade is also integral to freeing the Dread Dragoness Valdra from her prison within the Underdark and bringing about the Twilight War.
The Fang of Huxenotizhuatli—along with her sister daggers—soon spread along with the yuan-ti as they spread across Holos and carved out their empire at the dawn of the Mithril Era. This dagger became an heirloom among the high priests of the Tsakhit yuan-ti of the Niru Delta. In around 400 ME, the Proto-Temekanian united the peoples of the Niru River through conquest and came to marry many members of the Tsakhit nobility, including the owners of the Fang of Huxenotizhuatli. The last person to possess the Fang is thought to have been Sethenes II and it is believed that he has been buried with it.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
Over the centuries, the black color of the Fang of Huxenotizhuatli has all but drained away, leaving a ghostly translucent appearance. Upon wounding a creature, the magic of the blade draws the blood into itself and gaining a faint crimson edge. It is believed that those souls killed by the Fang are harvested along with their blood and become trapped within the blade.
Over the course of many killings, the blade grows darker in coloration until it has all but returned to a glossy reddish-black. Once this happens, the Fang can be used to resurrect the soul of a long dead individual. The blade tears their spirit from the Underworld and releases its sanguine contents as a physical body for the spirit to inhabit. Any souls previously harvested by the blade are destroyed and prevented from reaching the afterlife. After doing so, the blade is becomes colorless once more and useless.
Even without sacrificing victims to the blade, the Fang of Huxenotizhuatli can achieve its resurrection power. The blade naturally gains strength over time, though by how much varies depending on where the blade is located. Typically however, the blade regains its ability every 36 years. This waiting time can be sped up through the blood sacrifice of souls, with one soul reducing the wait time by one week.
According to some doomsday cults, the Fang of Huxenotizhuatli is an integral part in enacting the Twilight War, a devastating conflict which will result in the return of the Great Old One—Valdra—from her subterranean prison. These prophesies claim that if the Fang is reunited with its sister blades and brought to the place of its creation, then its sacrificial powers can be used to bring about the apocalypse. However, it is unclear how exactly the Fang's limited abilities could be used or how exactly such a ritual would work.
