The Mutani

The Mutani are a distinct and marginalized subgroup within the Darmerii society. They exhibit significant subtypes and races, all of which occupy a unique social class of their own. Unfortunately, the Mutani are barely tolerated and regarded with a similar disdain as one might reserve for a stray, starved dog.   These people live on the fringes of Darmerii civilization and have little to no discernible culture of their own. They are overwhelmingly found residing in the squalid slums of Darmerii cities or pushed into the most inhospitable and unforgiving regions within the empire's territories. Here, they often face the choice of either succumbing to the harsh environment or enduring a perpetual struggle against relentless poverty.   An unusual trait of the Mutani is that their males are entirely sterile, unable to reproduce, while their females exhibit hyperfertility, leading to unique dynamics within their already disadvantaged communities. This stark contrast in reproductive capabilities further complicates their societal standing and challenges their ability to carve out a meaningful place within the greater Darmerii society.
It is not uncommon for certain minor and unscrupulous Lords to bolster their leve forces by establishing breeding camps. These camps enable the serving soldiers to indulge in physical pleasures, and the resulting male offspring are raised as combat resources. Although these offspring are typically physically weaker than the average Darmerii, their rapid maturation rate, reaching adulthood in just 8 years compared to the standard 18, provides a compelling rationale for this practice.   Nonetheless, this practice remains widely considered distasteful and is vehemently disapproved by four out of the five great houses of the Western Empire. The ethical concerns surrounding these breeding camps underline the moral dilemmas within the Darmerii society and highlight the divisive nature of the issue.
