The Knight

Please bear in mind that a knight is not necessarily one individual noble man. He comes with not only himself but his attendants (squire & page). The page is a boy (from about seven years of age) who serves a knight for seven years before becoming a squire. The pages duties include acting as the knights groom caring for the knights horse, messenger, serving food & clothing, as well as attending lessens on dancing, reading & writing and heraldry taught by the knights spouse. A squire (an adolescent of about fourteen years) is essentially the knights personal assistant who himself is learning the ropes of being a knight, his duties include caring for the knights weapons, armour and horse. From about the age of twenty-one, if the knight feels that the squire has 'earned his spurs' he can decide to 'knight' the squire effectively making him his equal.

The Sparth

Similar to the knight and his team but a gallowglass and his attendants a kern and horse boy. This team is known as a 'sparth'.
