Ningen

Vast mer believed to be mutated cousins to Leviathans, Ningen are found only in the Sea of Wyrms where they usually prefer to stay in deep waters, being rarely seen. Due to this, on the rare occasions, they elect to surface, they rarely have any warning as to who sights them. As it is, little is known about their physiology, biology, psychology or social structure, though according to Icthyocentaurs who have spoken to Mer who have met Ningen they are lonesome creatures, preferring the company of whales to most mer, though they greet visitors with relative politeness, despite their extremely misanthropic tendencies.
Ningen appear to eat little, once they have attained full size, and use magic to help them to maintain homeostasis in the freezing waters they call home. When they do eat it includes everything from seals and fish to larger whales, though they will only eat Killer Whales if unaccompanied by Orca-Mer, knowing their cousins see the creatures as kin of a kind. This is a particular point Icthyocentaurs have commented on; that Ningen, for all their misanthropy, are surprisingly considerate of those who may visit them and, on one notable occasion, nursed back to health an Icthoycentaur who was injured in a storm into one’s territory. These actions, most Icthyocentaurs say, speak to deeply empathetic personalities, though sadly, as yet, no wizard has managed to meet and communicate with a Ningen to see if the same holds true for our kind.
