As of yet, no known transmissions of the disease from a carrier to another patient has been recorded.

Causes

It seems the disease comes into being due to an imbalance of magics in the victim's body in combination with previously present mental conditions. Through either a refusal to accept ones magic, a corruption of ones magic, or the sudden and significant gain or loss in magic.

Symptoms

The condition is a painful one, the magic lashes out at the mental pain of the victim, and sometimes in an attempt to help the victim the magic contorts and attempts to manifest. This results in physical trauma ranging from internal bleeding, bruising, broken or fractured bones, muscle spasms, and organ damage.

Treatment

Most Healers treat it with a combination of Pain-Relieving Potions, muscle relaxants and therapy.

Prognosis

Screaming Body is named for its most notable and terrifying feature which occurs only in severe untreated cases. In late stages of the disease, the magic attempting to simultaneously help the wix and lash out at the pain may begin to mirror subconscious aspects of the individual’s mind, enacting them as shadows under the skin. This is especially terrifying in Strzyga patients, as it has been known to pull unconscious magic out into the open, or even give personality to the non-active twin, making it seem as though the never-alive twin is screaming to be freed from their twin’s body.

All sentient creatures are capable of carrying the disease although the nations of men and god fearing mortals seem to suffer the disease more than most. Magical Creatures and non-humanoids have nearly never been reported as victims of Screaming Body.

Prevention

Education in one's latent magical talents is necessary and in some places legally mandated in order to prevent severe cases of Screaming Body. However it has been noted to only have its worse effects in conjunction with Strzyga patients and therefore all expected twins regardless of successful conception must be blessed or prayed for by a local priestess or cleansing figure, in order to best increase survival chances for both twins.

Epidemiology

The condition is most prevalent in young children as they come into their powers and attempt to adjust to the new spectrum of abilities and responsibilities. Those mages and young casters that become too power hungry and undisciplined are in greater danger of becoming carriers of Screaming Body.

History

In the previous eras, Screaming Body was speculated to be a result of many things. Demonic Possession or lineage was thought to be a large factor in people who contracted the disease, the lineage of religious deserters were believed to be cursed with Screaming Body until the family line atoned for their abandonment of piety. Although these things have been officially stricken from the official reasoning behind the disease, popular belief still holds these rumors to be true.

Cultural Reception

People with Screaming Body Syndrome are believed to be pitiful creatures who are lost in their own hubris or self doubt. All who are seen suffering from the disease are guided to the nearest temples for a free starter treatment in dealing with the pains and injuries. But overall the victims are left to fend for themselves as the general populace believes the disease purges the weak or impure mages from the population of magic carriers.
