Byasta Rossignol, The Punny Bard Character in Hopeful Shattering Universe | World Anvil

Byasta Rossignol, The Punny Bard

Byasta Rossignol (X-SAMPA: bja.sta R/O.si.NOl) was born in 2404 on Lase-kan in the Alixhemni nation. He is most known for being the pun-loving lead singer of the band The Active Aerophones.

Early Life

He and his sister Seri grew up with their immediate family in the Roselake Colony building. They lived there in the 15 or so years that its mining project was functional, and families were invited to live there.   Vicki Crenshaw and Seri, both younger sisters in their respective families, both took cello lessons from the same teacher, thus allowing the families to discover that they lived just four doors apart.   This allowed the families to teach each other a number of things. In Byasta's case, he and Violet Crenshaw both were tutored in English by Violet's mother, Vivian. This started his interest in Engish-based wordplay, which carried through to The Active Aerophones.   (21st century distaste for such things as puns did not last. Perhaps it was due to all the languages people knew by this time. Or maybe it's just the sweet discovery of something you didn't think of.)   As Byasta grew, he also discovered a love for singing in a number of languages, as well as a general love for the inner workings of both music and language.

The Band

Byasta, Seri, and two of their friends, Steven Avwalid and Jikliu Thomasson, started The Active Aerophones in one of the RLC building's rehearsal rooms.   Byasta was the lead singer, Seri was the cellist, Steven was the drummer, and Jikliu was the "lights guy".   Byasta's puns made them stand out among the countless musicians in the colony.

Powers and Loyalty

The band members were all color mages. Seri and Byasta were both blue mages, Steven was a red and white one, and Jikliu was a yellow and white one.   The awakening of their powers did not end the band. Instead, they all went to the same training school in the Procyon solar system.   Seri and Byasta learned how to make extra sounds by controlling the small amounts of water in the air. Steven and Jikliu learned how to work together to create light effects neither thought possible.   By combining their training and skills, they were able to create a lot of the effects they'd previously used technology for. They still used technology for several things; they'd grown fond of many of the sounds that their gear could make.   There's no replacing that theremin, after all. Even if you can play it from across the room.   Jikliu and Byasta even found great fun in building synthesizers that would respond well to their and their bandmates' powers.   When the Active Aerophones played their first concert tour after graduation, it was regarded as one of their most astonishing.

Continued Friendship with Violet Crenshaw

Byasta and Violet kept in contact after the evacuation of the RLC.   He was (along with Seri) one of the first people to visit her in recovery after the explosion in the library.   He was the one to convince her that her "robotic ears" were different, but not lesser than her own original ones, and that he would still love her anyway.   "I've loved you since we were kids, and that will not change, no matter what machinery houses you. If you are an AI, if you cannot see, if you cannot hear...you are still you."   He and Seri convinced Vicki to visit Violet, reminding her that she was still the same person. Then the three of them finally convinced Vivian and Ryssi to visit their daughter.

Nice read. "21st century distaste for such things as puns did not last. " of course not puns are great! Sounds like some interesting performances but I still wonder what the extent of their magic is. Is it only colors?   Btw if you don't use the sidebar you can make it dissapear in the settings of your article. Also one section is all within a header making it different from the rest :)

Feel free to check my new world Terra Occidentalis if you want to see what I am up to!

Thank you for telling me <3 The header thing's been fixed (forgot to close a header tag, glad it didn't make things even worse!). I'll have to poke the sidebar, that you for that as well. I'm a newbie still, so anything like this is a major help. <3   And about the colors ...   The magic comes from crystals that infuse people with various abilities, largely dependent on the color of the crystal or crystals that infused them. There's a couple of articles about this. The more general one is Crystal Magic and its Colors">here, and the one about fusion colors is Crystal Fusion">here. There's still work to be done with fleshing all this out. But, as applied to these fine folks, Seri and Byasta have the power to control fluids, which comes from blue crystals. (Almost nobody's power is at reality warper levels, but it allows for fun magical abilities.) Jikliu has electromagnetic control from yellow crystals, and Steven has thermal control from red ones. The white power mentioned for both those young men is from white crystals, which is one of the least defined powers in the system, but manifests for these two as telepathy. It's not in the article, but I had Jikliu envisioned as being mute as far as his voice, but not his telepathy.   I'll get these things written out more fully and linked better after the contest. Not yet entirely sure what counts as a minor edit, haaaa. I'll get it. :)

Puns you say...... tell us more. Please. There arent nearly enough puns for a bard challenge.   The band seems very close, but I feel like there could be a little more about Violet as she seems somewhat important to Byasta.

Feel free to stop by some of my WorldEmber articles if you want. My favorites are The Book of the Unquiet Dead, Outpost of the Moons, and The Emerald Hills. Feedback is always appreciated.

Thanks for your comment! <3   I know these two are close like brother and sister, given that the Crenshaw and Rossignol kids grew up together. I can't decide whether they become a couple (get married, have kids, etc.), or just stay brother and sister.

Nice characters :D Though you cannot sell us a pun-based band and not share terrible puns in the article :p

Thank you for your comment! <3   I'll have to do that after the contest. I took on the punny challenge from Janet (she'd really wanted a punny bard..it was in a livestream), but then realized while writing this that....I am not very punny. As a result, it's unfortunately a bit of an informed attribute, for now. Maybe I can get some folks to help me with that bit.

That's a very deep story with many colours, from cheerful light to deep, grim undertones. It's probably one of the reasons it's so attractive, even though there weren't a lot of puns mentioned per se in the text (I'd love them, for I love a good pun, but understand that this may be asking for a lot :D).   At the end of the story, there is a time skip when Violet gets caught up in an accident. Is this a part of a story you are planning to write in the future or just a glimpse to get the reader to know the relationship between Byasta and Violet?

Thank you for your comment! <3   It's both, actually. Violet is a character I've had in my mind for a while. I'm glad for the Bard Challenge, because it gave me 4 new characters to work with. :)
