Shimmer Material in Horizon of the Void | World Anvil

Shimmer

"Yes my clothes are made from colored clouds, and no you are not hallucinating. My gown is indeed shifting colors. I just hope it settles on a range of blues by the ball."
— Simmeri partygoer talking to their Krellian friend
As a culture, the Simmeri have always had a strong obsession with the concept of beauty and all the ways one can attain such a thing. Part of this want and desire can be seen in their elaborate clothing that races such as the Walin would call pointlessly flashy. The epitome of this beatific vision of life is the multicolored, ever-shifting silk called Shimmer.   Produced by harvesting a rare dense collection of multicolored gases and refining it into a fine thread-like consistency, this material is sought after veraciously by the richest members of Simmeri society. Shimmer clouds can only be found in areas where pockets of dense air can easily collect and remain contained for extended periods of time. The quality of the product vastly depends on how long a Shimmer cloud has persisted after formation, with the best possible iteration needing to be gathered a few hours before its total dissolution. This feat is so difficult that even those trained in the practice struggle to succeed.   The true beauty of this material is something that only Simmeri can understand to the fullest degree. This is due to them having an extraordinarily wide range of color wavelength comprehension. While the majority of races may see a rainbow's worth of colors, a Simmeri will see the entire spectrum before their eyes. It is such a euphoric experience that even the greatest of beauty philosophers struggle to put it into a sensible sentence.

Material Characteristics

Shimmer is an airy, smooth, silk-like material with a constantly shifting coloration. It has a nearly translucent quality that can be misconstrued as a holographic image.
