Wearable Telecommunications

Utility

The primary function of wearable telecommunications is the exact same as it has been for all telecommunications devices since their invention: instantaneous communication over long distances. Mind-to-mind thought transference is the preferred method of personal communication now, although written, audio, and visual communication options remain standard, especially for professional communication. Aside from connecting end users to each other, wearable telcom devices also typically provide access to the local planetary public network. When wearing a thought-transference capable earpiece connected to an up-to-date network, the user can instantaneously "know" and "understand" anything they are capable of learning via the local network. Aside from communications capability, wearable tech typically also has computing and gaming functionality built into it.

Manufacturing

Wearable telecommunications devices require delicate electronics. While many of the components can be built on remote worlds, only the worlds with the largest populations have the means to extract all the elements necessary for construction of a complete device.

Social Impact

Wearable telcom tech has served the same function as other telecommunications methods over the past few centuries. The biggest social impact from wearable tech is the ability for the human brain to directly interact with accessible data. Instead of the user having to learn and remember information they look up, any information that is looked up is essentially known and understood immediately as long as the connection to the information source is maintained.
Access & Availability
Almost everyone on every planet has access to some form of wearable communication device. Only the poorest civilians have no access to wearable telecommunications tech.
Complexity
Wearable telecommunications computers require a wide range of resources to produce the sensitive electronics. The equipment can only be manufactured with materials available on Earth and a few of the more developed worlds. On these worlds, elaborate headsets that double as fashion pieces or headgear have full virtual reality immersion, substantial computing capability, and wireless access to planetary networks. On more remote worlds with small populations, simple earpieces that function solely as communications devices are more common.
