F1D9 virus Condition in Humanity's Grave | World Anvil

F1D9 virus

Before civilization collapsed, climate change laid waste to the landscape. Rising sea levels, droughts, and severe storm systems made it difficult to grow food and raise livestock. To ward off the coming changes, scientists threw caution to the wind genetically experimenting on crops and livestock. In the beginning, their efforts worked, giving the world a food supply resistant to the planets changing climate. Unfortunately, societies success demonstrating nothing but humankind's short-sighted nature. The virus used to experiment on changed. It mutated, latching on to the DNA of its host forever-changing it. Early on it only affected crops starting with grains then spreading to all other plants before long livestock displayed the same mutating properties.   The mutations varied from one species to another. Some plants and animals died falling to extintion. Unable to weather the stresses of the virus, those that survived displayed mutations in a variety of ways. Plants walked and moved under their own will. Animals devolved into ferocious creatures of devastating power. A few plants and animals showed signs of sentients.   Some of flora and fauna developed immunities to the virus, and that is when things took a turn for the worst. In an attempt to correct their mistakes, society experimented on those that had immunities to the virus in hopes of creating an antidote. During these efforts, the virus jumped species infecting humans, killing off most of the population. Like before those that survived had an immunity to the viruses mutations while a small portion of the people changed. Many of those affected developed gifts, supernatural abilities. Things like telepathy and clairvoyance became the norm. Looking for someone to blame for the horrible nature the world had become society persecuted those gifted. Calling them Abhorrs the hunted any who were different, forcing the Abhorrs to live in hiding.
