Tyton, the Nightfather

An immense black barn owl   Tyton the Nightfather is one of the duotheistic creator-gods in the Amaranthine pantheon of the Humblewood setting for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. Counterpart to Ardea, Tyton created the world of Humblewood from formless chaos, and in particular is associated with all things relating to darkness. Unlike most duotheistic "dark gods", Tyton is not an evil deity, nor is he regarded as an entity to fear. The birdfolk and humblefolk alike characterize him as a kindly figure, a custodian and guide who welcomes the old, frail and otherwise departed back into his company as familiar friends before he peacefully guides their souls to be reborn. He is the god of old age and memory, invoked at funerals as a way to remember those who have passed and to recall their lives and deeds. In the eyes of his faithful, Tyton is a patient observer who watches every soul from the moment of their birth to the inevitable moment of their death, before leading them to be cleansed and made new so they can begin the cycle over again - this gentle, paternal nature is the source of his monikers.   The realm of Tyton is said to be a land where everything is cold, dark and eternally still, a place totally inaccessible to mortals and hostile even to most of the Amaranthine, save for Altus.   Because Tyton embodies and cherishes death as part of the natural cycle, he is a bitter enemy of necromancers and other tomb-robbers.
Tyton is always presented as an enormous, jet-black barn owl.

As day turns to night, so must all things end. Respect the power of death, but fear not the end, for it is part of the Rhythm.
