BETRAYED!
5th Month, 24th Day, 500 AAY
Long story short, after nearly getting in a fight with a perch guard who enjoyed just a little too much trying to swing his dick around we finally got to meet with the Mayor again. Still not entirely certain what caused me to be so standoffish, I will be the first to admit I'm usually quite quick to back down when faced with aggression but something about the entire thing had me glaring the birdfolk down with more malice than I thought myself capable of. And then that damned mayor, we were supposed to get our letter so we could go to the council and handle those damned fires but now its another quest. This time everyone is whispering of a witch in the woods who is summoning demons, and both Scrap and Collina are pretty dead set on killing her if we manage to find her, but I really would like to take a different approach. What if everyone is blowing this out of proportion and she is just an innocent woman? Would we be killing her for nothing but practicing magic in a swamp?!
Sometimes life makes you wonder why you bother making plans in the first place. You can carefully plan out every little thing you need to do but because you get so focused on those details even the smallest thing can trip you up. After finding an imp and a shrine, and fighting the stinky little bugger we finally made out ways to the witch (Susan's) home in the swamp. I managed to convince the others to just try talking to her first though we made up a story about Collina and I being students from the Avium that were lost. After talking with her a bit and getting to know her and Normal (her beetle) our story broke over me asking a dumb question and then Scrap was spotted through a window. So we all sat down and told her the truth, turns out she really was summoning demons but not with malice. She was trying to investigate ways to stop the scorched grove from continuing to expand or maybe even putting it out. They hadn't been much help though and she was out of supplies. We offered to help her by catching frogs.
Every. time. Every damn time I get eaten! I at least was able to fight my way out of the frog but this is getting positively ridiculous! Can I go on one adventure without being consumed?! And then when we managed to get the frogs and help Susan, we were waiting outside and then the demon she summoned ended up attacking her. We fought it and saved her and she swore of summoning demons. She gave us her instrument as proof of her "death" so we could finish our quest. We headed back and finally managed to get our letter, next stop Alderheart!!
I don't much like slimes
5th Month, 23rd day, 500 AAY
Thankfully sleep was not the worst. We are to see the mayor today, and I hope he does not ask for much in exchange for his endorsement. If I can try and be the one to do the talking everything should go smoothly. Regardless! I must put on a good face! We are speaking to a birdfolk in a position of leadership, they will likely have some high standards and I always love an excuse to use my perfume.
That could have gone immensely better. I do not blame either of my companions, they are both kind and helpful people. The mayor seemed to be a highly stressed man, pacing like crazy. So, when it was asked if we were adventurers, Collina answered before I could speak affirming him. He was so excited to have us take on this quest to save a corvum girl who had gotten lost in a cave in the swamp. I tried very hard to keep my frustration and concern off my face, I am not a fighter. We took some time to gather supplies and look into some of the books here, I tried to find books on fighting but there was nothing I could hope to learn from these my brain just doesn't work this way. Faye came to my rescue again though, she can be a bit harsh and clipped about important matters but I think it's necessary. She offered to make sure I have plenty of time to practice my sword fighting while we are on the road and suggested I find people to practice and spar with while we travel.
We have set off for the cave, and after a short consideration everyone decided it best to take the quickest path. We all knew the risk, so I don't think anyone was too surprised when we came across some slimes to fight. The first went down with what felt like relative ease but the second one I fought left me feeling nothing but shame. Getting both swords and my foot stuck in it? I know I am not a strong cervan, but I can't help being embarrassed that I needed so much help from the little chickadee.
Of course the cave was laden with even more slimes, they were falling a bit easier ( I think) but still wearing us down. After we dispatched 5 of them that dropped down and went after poor scrap, Faye suggested we take a moment to rest and recover. Everyone got in a bit of a nap and a meal and we felt revitalized to keep going. Our next possible path was awfully rickety and Faye was understandably worried about continuing forward, but Scrap did some amazing work fixing it up with the sticky slime remains he had. Unfortunately, it didn't last long enough as Collina managed to bring it down on us.
it. got. worse. I was actually eaten by the big slime that trapped that corvum girl. Do you have any idea how terrifying it is to be suspended in a living creature, being unable to move or speak, and then watching one of your friends arrows stop inches from your face?! I was terrified!
We managed to slay it eventually but my goodness was that awful. We got the girl back and the mayor was grateful. She was a rather passionate one when it came to learning about slimes. In a tipsy state I kept making her scraps convo circle whenever it seemed like it was teetering out. Not sure why I found it funny but I digress. We should hopefully get our letter and be on our way to Alderheart very soon.
The rush to Meadowfen
5th Month, 22nd day, 500 AAY
It took so long to recover from knowing my home was gone forever. I could think, I couldn't move, everything felt unreal. I do not know if it was Cairith or Faye, but one gave me the drive to get up and do something about it. After the initial foolishness of wanting to run straight to my burning home, Scrap and Collina joined me as we headed towards Meadowfen, coming across a scorched woman in the process. She was survivor from Ashbarrow, trying to get help. We left her with Faye as we dashed for Meadowfen. As we tried to get a hold of the mayor, it slipped what had happened to Ashbarrow, causing some panic. The mayor was sympathetic and concerned but didn't know what their small village could do about it and now had to focus on calming the people. He suggested we go to Alderhart to let them know the situation and call for aid. I offered to calm the people, which thankfully worked for the most part. Scrap and Collina went to get some supplies while I stop and spoke to Faye before we moved on.
While on our way to Alderheart we came across those bandits again in the middle of a mugging in the middle of the road. I can not lie, it is exceptionally foolish, they could have tried doing it off the path if they didn't want to be interrupted. They also had the same vulpin with them that was at the last fight, we can't seem to escape her. She challenged me to a dual and was an exceptionally powerful opponent. She did not want to take my forfeit until her loss was in sight, strangely I find myself looking forward to fighting her again. I want to beat her on my own merit. Show off the time my mentors put in to training me as a sword bard.
The victim of the mugging was a lovely cat woman named Eliza Pennygleam. She asked if we would escort her to Winnowing Reach to ensure she could make it there safely this time. We agreed and I helped with getting her cart stacked back up. She seemed to struggle a bit with moving it so Collina and I offered to help. I was not needed though as that chickadee is scary strong. We spoke briefly to Eliza of our goals and she suggested we get letters of recommendation from the surrounding areas to get a meeting with the bird council.
While we continued our adventures we smelled fire, and I could hear the sound of emberbats not far away. With how close we are to the woods, my conscious would not let us just let them set fire to the place. We went to take care of them and found they were attacked two skeletal birds. After fighting off the bats, which caused one of the skeletons to fall, and taking care of the fires the other skeleton looked as though he thought of attacking us before seeing Collina. He quaked in fear and dropped to the ground. I knocked him out to be safe, though Collina said it was nothing to worry about. Turns out they were after a meteorite that recently fell from the sky. Scrap grabbed the "sky shiny" quickly, adding it to his collection. He then decided to split one of the skulls from the bird to ensure it is dead which really bothered Collina as they were apparently voluntarily this way. They had donated their bodies to the school she was from and chose this life.
As we left we saw a giant eyeball watching us, which set Scrap and Collina into a worry. We reported what had happened and continued on our way.
Winnowing Reach is quite the swampy area, it is very close to the Mokkfields so it makes sense. We helped Eliza get set up and she offered all of us a free item from her shop. I decided on a new bit of armour. The road is far more dangerous than I thought and I need all the protection I can get. We decided to get some rest before heading to speak with the head of the village as he will likely want something in return for an endorsement to see the council in Alderheart. While at the bar of the inn we ran into Scrap's mentor. He was a pleasant man, easy to talk to. Scrap bought us food and drink and is apparently quite the light weight. Upon saying goodbye to his mentor and heading to bed scrap was playing with his meteorites and I admit my curiosity got the better of me. Oh what a mistake that was, the first one didn't feel like much, just a hollow rock. But the second one... it didn't like me. Something in there hissed and clicked at me and I tossed it back to scrap. I let the manager and Collina know and while Collina could name all the possible creatures it could have been they didn't seem to concerned. I do hope I will still be able to rest tonight.
My journey begins
5th Month, 21st day, 500 AAY
Today is my first, memorable, day beyond Ashbarrow. I assisted my grandparents with getting packed up and on the road, some of their things were left behind while they find a new home in Marshview. I hope it will help grandmother, as it is far more flat. The village was so supportive, they promised to care for the home while we were gone and Leya even presented me with a tent everyone got together to get me for my travels. I can not wait to return home with more fame under my belt to give them a truly stunning performance. Grandmother let me know that if I want to get in touch, I should send letters to our old home and they will be able to get them. As a thinks to the people, I was able to entertain them once more. I hope it brings them hope, and that Big Tom will no longer be a concern in their minds.
It didn't take me long to reach the farming village, and it seems my name is more known than I thought. Before I could spend too much time greeting the people, or even get to the sing up booth for their big competition, the raptor from before approached and let me know I was already signed up. She brought me over to a little mapach's merchant booth to meet the little chickadee that my grandmother was so enchanted by and the merchant himself. Their names are Collina and Scrap, they are sweet, I like them. Collina and I both purchased something from Scrap's booth. I got a metal flower that sits nicely at the base of my horns. The raptor, Faye, let us know that we would all be competing in the competition and calmed Scrap's worries over his shop. I made sure to get ready to put on the best show these people had ever seen. A hedge had been watching us get ready, so we thought we would speak to him. He was very cocky in his abilities and held a lot of malice for Collina. I knew many humblefolk disliked the birdfolk but I never really paid enough attention to how much disdain was there. I feel the need to doubly show this one up, as well as make sure our little chickadee showed this guy what real ability was.
The competition was spectacular; Collina, Scrap, and I took the top three positions. The hedge was clearly not happy but wanted to speak to us, after regrouping with Faye she did mention the possible danger but said it was up to us, and after Scrap pointed out that if we didn't confront them here they would catch us on the road we decided to see what they wanted. These nasty folk were nothing but bandits, they wanted Scrap and I to join them and said Collina could remain unharmed if we did. A laughable offer and of course we refused. I can't say I have been in many fights, but it was quite startling to see blood in that amount for the first time and to watch people drop so harshly. It was a rather rude wakeup call to what the real world had to offer on the road.
We decided to head to Meadowfen next, as a group! I feel much more comfortable having these three with me. We made decent progress into the woods before deciding to set camp for the night.
