Early camp in what would later become Northern California is established near a Tolowa settlement by an expedition of pioneers moving from the Mississippi Valley, as well as a group of Spanish Missionaries. Funding, and provisions for the expedition had been provided in their entirety by a wealthy European benefactor that remained anonymous. Despite their anonymity they imposed many specific stipulations on the expedition, the founding of the camp, and beyond. The most notable of these being the large amount of saplings being brought on the expedition, and the extreme amount of care being provided for them.
