The Hot Man

The Ice Elves are born explorers (and spies) who serve the goddess Snaerstjarna. They came from her home, the sphere of Skadivard, which lies between the warmth and light of Dagstjarna and the darkness of the void. Snaerstjarna has sent her chosen people to nearly every sphere of the system to fulfill her purposes.
You may not go beyond the edge of the settlement, Small One. It is not for us up there.
The greatest of their explorers and navigators are granted power directly from their goddess to travel through the realm, sniff out other people's secrets, and report them back to the Goddess of Trickery. A well-prepared exploration team can teleport from their home to a known site anywhere in the realm, isskjoll and all, gather the information they seek, and be back for the next meal.
Why not?
This sets a bold and daring example for their children, which is unfortunate, since so many Ice Elf children are raised in environments hostile to Ice Elves. Ice Elf parents (and aunts and uncles) will compete with each other to find the most horrifying way to keep their children from wandering off. The Hot Man is one of those ways.
The temperature is beyond bearing. You could get lost. And the Hot Man will come out of a vent in the ground and try to eat you.
Depending on the parent, the Hot Man might eat the young elf raw, roasted, parboiled, baked in a jellyfish, dusted with mold spores, or stuffed into a gigantic lich pepper. These stories are used until the children are old enough to understand the actual dangers outside the settlement. At that point, the parents will stop telling the stories, and instead take the children to the hot caves on the way out of the settlement and let them feel what it is like for themselves. This system almost always works.
