2023 Summer Camp Pledge and Homework
This year for summer camp, I plan to work on my newest world. It's still very much in the early stages so this feels like a good way to get myself working and thinking of new ideas. I hope to complete all prompts, but realistically, I would like to complete at least half.
Theme 1: Power
- The main forms of power within the world are magical/physical and political (for the story the world centers around).
- In terms of the former, each species has their own abilities and subdivisions within those races have honed certain ones or used them in ways that have become emblematic of that particular group. Characters themselves can become very powerful through training and talent. The powers at play during the war and subsequent revolution were instrumental on both sides for the outcomes and continue to be used as a back up for when political dealings fail or to strengthen one's position within the social hierarchy.
- Demons, angels, elves, and hybrids each have their own political system. However, were subsumed into the demonic structure and then the hybrids'. Currently, the hybrids are in charge and their power structure is based on not only the time each elven tribe joined the rebellion, but also their place in the subsequent fight among the hybrids for ultimate authority.
- The hybrids want to have power after being used during the war then shunned after. They harbor resentment toward the 'pure' species, especially the demons. Along with this, due to their mixed lineage, they believe that they are qualified to lead multiple races as they are able to wield more magical power and have what they believe to be a superior mixed mind that allows them to determine what his best for multiple species
- Strengths- hybrids have the greatest political and magical strength of all species. They were created to be cannon fodder, but were, in fact, much stronger than the demons who made them. Their time in two wars has given them a strong knowledge of battle strategy and combat. Watch the demons fight within the military and governmental structure allowed them to see a what not to do in a government dynamic, which they based their new system on. Demons and angels hold similar status in terms of magical and physical ability. Demons are adept at force strategies and conquering. They know how to control a large populace and ensure distribution of resources to sustain one. Angels understand peacetime and how to maintain cooperation among powerful factions toward a greater goal. Elves are the most versatile and easily adapt to changing situations, a necessity due to their station as physically the weakest of the species. They have developed greater technology to attempt to close the gap as well.
- Weaknesses- hybrids were mostly raised among demons and therefore picked up a great deal of social darwinism from them. They are prideful and have a desire for revenge and power. This leads to a great deal of infighting even as they denounce the demons for the same after the end of the war. Demons hold similar views and after being deposed they have a great deal of trouble uniting due to centuries of bad blood held loosely together through a shared species. Angels tended to stay within their territory and had little understanding of the rest of the land. They believed themselves safe there and grew somewhat arrogant about their ability to remain outside of conflict, leading to a lack of good army. Now, with barriers between lands broken, they know little about elves and hybrids, making it difficult for them to interact with the new nation. Elves, being the weakest, are more used to being dragged along. They are fearful of the other two species, but also the hybrids who now lead them. Despite their new status in society, they tend to be passive and not speak up without knowing what their leaders want.
- The outer areas of the continent are considered the 'frontier' in the physical sense. None of the species are particularly adept sea farers or swimmers so have left the sea alone. The exception is one elven clan who moved into the water. They have become highly outside of the system, acting as more allies than subjects of the new hybrid rule. Only a few hybrids were made from this clan and the representative did well in the ruler battle. However, they ultimately lost and have since stayed mostly around the outer areas of the continent with their people, only entering the main city when called for meetings. These elves are considered terrifying by the land dwelling species and their territory is off limits
- In terms of technology, the hybrids find selective breeding to be wrong as this resulted in their creation and subsequent abuse by the demons. Forced mind control magic is looked at as taboo by all species, although this does not mean it hasn't been secretly tried.
- With how long each species lives, relics are few and far between. Each of the three has objects they revere for different reasons while hybrids, being new, have only just begun keeping certain things that will become relics one day if they survive
- For elves, particular trappings belonging to each tribe are considered relics. These are usually pieces of clothing, weapons, or ornaments that have been passed down through the clans for generations. Clans who have a more war-like culture tend to favor pieces of weaponry or armor, while those that value trade favor old coinage and such. All have some artifact of the person considered their founder, generally a mythological figure, along with a piece from their hybrid that will become a relic.
- Demons keep pieces of horns from revered ancestors. Horns are considered an essential part of a demon as no two are the same. Families may have similar traits, but like fingerprints each one is unique. Clothing is also kept, especially pieces containing particular colors or crests.
- Angels keep bones from important people, along with beadwork representing their life. Rather than something the person owned directly, when someone considered important dies, those close to them create beaded works with colors and symbols to represent their accomplishments. These are considered part of the person's soul and highly valued.
