Led by
Daervulen Bahrlethier, hybrids, elves, and angels fought against the oppressive demon regime which had ruled for many centuries after conquering the other species. The final battle took place within the demonic capital and ended the reign of the kingdom.
The Conflict
Prelude
Demons and angels had fought for territory for centuries, with elves caught in the middle. In order to boost their numbers, demons promised elves protection in exchange for breeding 'volunteers' for their military program. These hybrids were to be used as low level, expendable foot-soldiers due to their shorter maturation time. Long lifespans were inherited, but not thought about during the process.
After the war was over, the hybrids were thrown out despite not only their success, but also advancement within the demonic military. Prejudice against hybrids persisted and the demons declared them 'useless' once their purpose had been served.
The hybrids moved to communities of elves with whom they shared ancestry, but had difficulty fitting in due to growing up within demonic military culture from birth. They continued to work to integrate and were eventually successful.
During this time, the demons drove the angels to complete subjugation and then turned on their elven allies. The demons were oppressive and violent, instituting a rigid social hierarch and strict social/biological Darwinistic mindset to justify their cruel treatment of conquered people. A highly stubborn nature among the demons led to difficulty in fixing military issues, especially after expelling the hybrid force, and internal affairs after a centuries long conflict, making government instability and power struggles within the court extremely common.
Hybrids were the first to think of rebelling, along with smaller elven clans. Daervulen Bahrlethier gathered many of his hybrid former comrades together and they used the demonic oppression, along with their shared heritage to convince the elven clans to gather and rebel. At first, only a few clans joined, most too broken and afraid of the demons to ally themselves with what was seen as a suicidal endeavor.
A force of approximately 1000, made of elves and hybrids began raiding small predominantly demonic towns, showing success against the military stationed there. The hybrids encouraged a great deal of barbarism, with revenge and justice used as the motive for why such tactics were not only necessary, but morally correct. With each raid, they took on larger targets and their numbers grew with each success. Within a three years, the rebel army had grown to 80,000, with angels joining as well.
Initially, the demons ignored the revolt, believing that the hybrids and those under them could simply not come together as reports said. To them, hybrids were discarded kindling and the elves and angels too fractured internally and with one another to become allies.
This arrogance allowed the rebels a great deal of freedom, which they used to take over approximately a third of the former elven territory, along with encroaching on angelic strongholds. Some of the latter were taken by force while others willingly joined.
By the time the demons began taking the rebel threat seriously, the rebels commanded a force of 200,000. Their raiding had given them supplies, money, and several strongholds from which to feed, house, and fund the troops. When demonic forces attempted to attack the hybrid bases, they were continuously repelled.
Daervulen and the other hybrids used their experience from serving under the demons to their advantage, including likely tactics, stronghold supplies, power structure, and beaurocratic weak points, to outflank and outmaneuver them despite the large number of minimally trained people under their command. The rebel army constructed forts of their own at decreasing distances from the demonic capital and the final battle took place almost exactly five years after the rebellion began.
In the final invasion of the capital, the rebels had prepared for months in advance, using knowledge of its construction obtained through spies and hybrid recollection. They infiltrated the main government offices and placed charges, detonating them while their army amassed outside the gates and drew the demonic leadership's attention. By the end of the day, the capital had fallen and the hybrids killed the demonic leaders, displaying their heads outside of the palace gates.
Hybrids took over the former demon government and began the process of setting up their own. After initial stability was established, they began to fight amongst themselves for authority. A council was proposed, but rankings were ingrained in the population.
Much of the army backed Daervulen for the government head after his leadership in the rebellion, but others wanted different candidates. In the end, the hybrids engaged in a battle to determine the new leader. Some rumblings stated that had he lost, the military was prepared to stage a coup against the winner until their preferred leader was installed.
Hybrids in general took control of their ancestral elven clans, working with full blooded elves in government.
A new social hierarchy was unofficially established after the demons' defeat. Society saw a reversal of roles, with the hybrids now occupying the top position while demons sit at the bottom. Angels are freer within the new structure while elves are divided in accordance with where their hybrid leader's placement within the battle. The Lethier clan currently occupies the top position as Daervulen is of their blood.
Rumors regarding the planned military coup should Daervulen have lost continue to persist, causing tensions in the council. These were heightened when the military gave him the title of Dajryúnle, a combination of 'one' in demonic and 'strategy' in elvish, meaning 'one who makes the first plan', or 'first general' (also could be translated as 'lord commander'). While under the control of the council as a whole officially, the military's honor showed a personal loyalty that in practicality means they will follow his orders over the main government.
The title of Luac, for 'first councilman' was created for the head of the council and is Daervulen's official role. However, as his power over the military increased and he took on more responsibility, and thus control, from the wider council, that role has expanded considerably. He was also given the honorific 'Nlemyuraba', literally meaning 'Light and Power', but more accurately translated as 'Guiding light, powerful one', for his leadership in the rebellion and victory in the following leadership battle. Their goal was publicly to bestow honor on the rebellion's leader, but to also gain favor from the person extremely popular with both the public and military. 'Nlemyuraba' has become a quasi-official title denoting a great deal of respect and deference to Daervulen's steadily increasing, monarch-like authority.
