Roller Beetles
Roller beetles are known for how they move their prey from one place to another, namely by surrounding it and rolling along. They have also been known to roll larger pieces of prey with their strong front legs. However, they have also been seen to take round objects from higher species and roll them away or move them to different areas. This is particularly prevalent in areas the beetles have established as within their colony's 'territory'.
Some among the elves have taken to keeping the beetles as pets and attempting to use their natural rolling instinct to race or have them engage in other games. This training has seen varying degrees of success and the general consensus is that the personality of each beetle is more responsible for their ability. Those who wish to mess with others tend to initially respond well so they are allowed more access to rolling objects later.
They are considered pests and pets at once. If one does not want them in their home, there are warding magics that work on them, along with other common insects. Government officials have stated that people are discouraged from having more than two in a home as three or more will attempt to gather others in order to form a colony base. Once a base is established, the only way to remove it is to burn the entire room, something very few are willing to do in their homes.
Basic Information
Anatomy
The beetles measure approximately five centimeters in length and walk on eight legs. Their front sets are used to roll prey to secluded areas to eat alone or back to a larger colony as shared food. They have one pair of antennae for sensory organs. Their hearing is minimal and they rely on the smell in their antennae to navigate.
