Chaosheim Terrarium

How It Works

Chaosheim Terrarium is a mantlepeice that, after having set on a mantle for a month, will rise up and hover just above.   The strange looking terrarium will begin to look very real as time seems to pass within it, revealing days, nights, and the lights of settlements.   For those who figure out its secret, they will gain a Agothoi houseguard.

The Cost

Careful observation of the terrarium once it begins showing its more magical nature to the owner will reveal that the tendril tops of the forests weave into a strange symbol, that of a Horn of Plenty.   Further research will reveal this to be the symbol of Agathos Daimon who prefers a libation of spilling a bit of wine, and only wine, after supper.   Not until the owner carries out the libation after suppers consumed in the home, will they gain the protective Agathoi spirit.

The Limitations

The Agathoi will face against any intruders and provide protection from inclement weather that might harm the home.   This spirirt is invisible to all sight except high level cleric or magic sight and tends to be unnoticed until something happens that the Agathoi needs to confront.   It cannot be pursuaded or enchanted to do anything else.   It will not obey any command by the owner but may be convinced to bring the owner into Chaosheim for an audience with Agathos Daimon.

Origin

Agathos Daimon, the serpentine god-protector of Alexandria, and his Agathoi heeded the words of the Oracle of the Potter and conspired with the Egyptian serpent god Knephis to find a way to save Alexandria. While Knephis left the city for Memphis to defeat the invading Macedonians, Agathos Daimon created a haven.   His Agathoi opened portals in the homes of the faithful, transporting them to a strange and new place of fungi bedrock, spiraling waterways, and vine-like trees woven into forests. This place, names Chaosheim in honor of the tragic times about to decend upon Alexandria. To further protect the faithful, Chaosheim presented itself as a mantlepiece in the real world, hiding its true nature.   Centuries later, a princess came to Baba Yaga, begging a favor, offered the strange mantlepiece, the last heirloom of her family, in payment. Intrigued by the power she sense within the mantlepiece, Baba Yaga agreed to carry out the favor.   She since learned the true nature of Chaosheim and had more than one conversation with Agathos Daimon. With a great many worships within his little world, he is now a powerful god who refuses to share that power with another. Protecting Chaosheim and its people is all that matters to him.   Baba Yaga, angered at this, tried more than once to destroy Chaosheim but Agathos Daimon's protection is too potent. Frustrated, she has sent it away to the cabinet to be sold. Sleizbykt finds the mantlepiece absolutely fascinating and keeps it on his mantle. Fortunately for him, Baba Yaga has since forgotten about that annoying bauble and no longer care one bit about it.
