The Spirit Realm
The river of souls, the spiritual realm, the infinite sea, the great winds, the primal stream, the source. That which flows through and around all things connecting them. It is here in this infinite and primal flow of spiritual energy that all souls and spirits originate. In its purest state, the spiritual realm exists in all states and in all forms at once constantly shifting based on our own perceptions yet without having ever changed at all. The most powerful spiritual entities are able to claim dominion over portions of the spiritual realm, bestowing order and rules upon it and shaping it to their will. In the centuries of exploration of the spiritual realm countless domains have been discovered their masters named and cataloged, yet who knows how many of these spirits and their domains remain.
An observation of the spiritual realm is that the flow of time is different and inconsistent in the spiritual realm, as there have been explorers who have traveled the great ocean for only a few moments and come back having aged 30 years, while others have gone only to return a decade later claiming that only a few minutes have passed. This makes exploring the spiritual realm all the more dangerous and thus only the most dedicated or arrogant researchers dare to venture into it.
One of the more mysterious places in the spirit realm is the 99 Afterlives, the home of the enigmatic judges. When a being with a soul dies, it will be visited by an entity known as a Judge. Judges seem to function as psychopomps safeguarding the souls of the dead, and taking them to their deserved afterlife. Not much is known about the process through which a judge determines what afterlife a person deserves as only the judges only allow the dead to travel with them into their realm. Over the centuries, however, researchers have been able to gather a little bit of information on the process of reincarnation. Throughout their life every action taken affects the soul, good or bad these deeds tie them to their past lives incurring a karmic debt that won't allow them to reincarnate. Thus a judge shall bring a soul to the Hall of the 99 Afterlives, where their karmic debt will be examined and they will be assigned the afterlife they have earned. For those who have lived virtuous lives, they will be taken to a paradise and live in bliss for a time and those who have lived evil lives shall be taken to one of the many hells where they will suffer as penance. Slowly their souls will be purified of all virtues and sins, shedding their memories and connections to their past life allowing them to eventually reincarnate and return to the mortal world once more.
