Ankheg
Biology
Ankhegs are large, insectoid creatures, with a thick, chitinous carapace. Two claws hold their prey in place, while a pair of powerful mandibles snap its bones. The most terrifying aspect of these creatures, however, is the scid it sprays from its mouth. It is strong enough to dissolve tough hide and even armor in a matter of seconds allowing for quick consumption of its victim.
Diet
While ankhegs have been known to feast on dwarves and humans, their prey of choice are the herd of domesticated animals found near those races. These animals are usually fairly sedentary and are rarely able to fight back. Once their victim is incapacitaded, they bring the carcass back the to center of the colony to consume it in safety.
Social Structure
Ankhegs live in colonies under the earth, surfacing only to catch their prey which they quickly drag back underground. These colonies have been observed to have between 100 and 500 members. Each of these colonies is led by a queen. Around twenty percent of the colony is comprised of soldiers who are tasked with protecting the colony from invading creature, usually other ankheg. the remainder of the colony are the workers, who dig the tunnels and hunt prey for the queen and soldiers.
Domestication
Ankhegs are widely viewed as a nuisance and bounties are commonly placed on queens by local lords. The story is different for the dwarves of Awira. In 224 OA, it was discovered that ankheg bile could be used in mining to soften stones, allowing for easier extraction of ore. Mushroom farmers started buying herds of goats and used them to attract ankhegs. After several initial missteps, they were able to figure out how to maintain a nearby colony without endangering themselves.
