Stories & Myths

  • A quickly spreading legend holds that, each night before midnight, Auril the Frost Goddess takes to the sky on the back of a white roc and weaves her spell, which manifests as a shimmering curtain of light—a beautiful aurora that illuminates the night sky and fades before dawn. This powerful magic prevents the next day’s sun from rising above the horizon, turning midday into twilight and trapping Icewind Dale in winter’s dark embrace, with no sunlight or warmth to melt the snow and ice. Her divine power barricades the mountain pass with blizzards and churns the Sea of Moving Ice with blistering winds.

  • Chardalyn is a flinty stone material resembling black ice that is cold to the touch. It is non-magical, but easily capable of being imbued with magic, both good/consecrated and evil/desecrated. Hundreds of years ago, a wizard named Akar Kessel found the sentient artifact Crenshinibon suffused with demonic magic and used it to erect a great black tower in Icewind Dale. When this tower was destroyed, the magic used to create it fused with the surrounding ice to form chardalyn. Prolonged contact with desecrated chardalyn can cause madness that usually fades away once the contact is broken.

  • Zarra was told a story by her parents that there is a tense and often violent goliath feud between the Akannathi Clan of Skytower Shelter and her own Thuunlakalaga clan of Wyrmdoom Crag.
