Town of Termalaine

Summary:  Termalaine is widely regarded as the most picturesque town in Icewind Dale, rising up from the flat approaching tundra, spreading out from the shore of Maer Dualdon, and bordered on the north and farther west by tall pines. For most visitors, the enchantment of the town is dispelled as soon as they feel the icy claws and teeth of the cold wind sweeping down from the north, shearing through their layers of clothing. Termalaine was built in the path of this dreadful gale, which continues well past the town to harry fishers on the southern half of the lake toward Bremen and Targos.    In addition to fishers, shipbuilders, and scrimshanders, Termalaine is home to miners who harvest gemstones from a cavern complex set into a low hill north and east of the settlement. Their efforts are hampered by creatures from the Underdark that occasionally find their way up into the mine. Whenever such creatures are discovered, the mine is sealed off and the townsfolk wait until a band of sellswords or adventurers can be hired to clear it out.     Places of Possible Interest:
  • The Blue Clam - The fishers of Termalaine typically finish their days here, warming their feet while they fill their bellies with spiced chowder and share news and gossip.
  • Clan Battlehammer Forge - This forge and blacksmith shop is run exclusively by several dwarves of the Battlehammer Clan. In addition to their natural gruffness, the dwarves here have a reputation for being particularly ornery with strangers.
  • The Eastside Inn - The Eastside is where most visitors in town stay. It entails one large common room where guests can eat, get a bit warmer, and engage with the owner. The guest rooms fan out from the common room as small, separate houses.
  • Militia Headquarters and Jail - Home to the town militia...and those miscreants unwise enough to run afoul of the strictly enforced laws in Termalaine.
Population: 600   Leader: Oarus Masthew was declared speaker after a close and contentious election. He is the adopted son of the former Speaker and has an extremely tenuous hold on the office.   Militia: Termalaine can muster up to 50 tough, but largely untrained militiamen, led by a few seasoned soldiers. They are effectively captained by Lt. Skerrin, the half-elf second-in-command. The militia captain, Jonas Easterling, is a drunkard often missing on a bender.   Heraldry: The open-mouthed head of a fish at the bottom of a sky-blue field, its jaws parted as it swallows a large rose-pink oval. The oval is a tourmaline, symbolic of the town’s gem mining.   Sacrifice to Auril: Warmth
