Malum Carnivale
History
Malum, or in the trade tounges Apples, are a central element in Oronian culture. It was believed that Temp, God of Life and the Sun rewarded them for their service to the land and gave them the Malum Trees. Their branches are high, but at the perfect height for an Oronian to use their trunk to harvest them
Because of its religious and economic status in society, at the beginning of the Month of Decay they hold the Malum Carnivale in celebration to Temp's gift. Over time it has evolved to a national holiday with extravagant parties and enormous amounts of food. While Malum are not the only thing sold, they are the main food element seen at the event.
Between games focused around malum, sugary treats, and alcohols, it is a time of joy and celebration.
Participants
While everyone in the empire participates in the carnivale, there are some special titles given out during the carnivale. In the city of Oro the Empress awards one civilian of the title of "The Golden Malum". This is decided through a series of challenging games that take place in the capital's arenas. This game is highly competitive and only the winner of the most challenges earns the title of The Golden Malum. People from all over the empire come to Oro to watch the Golden Malum Games. The winner of the title also earns a special prize that is a golden malum that is grown on a special tree in the palace. Some say it has special powers.
Observance
The first week in the Month of Decay is when the Carnivale occurs. This is because the last days to harvest apples is the month before in the Month of the Many. Once all preparations have been completed for the year's harvest, then the Carnivale begins.
While not all areas experience winter in the Oronian Empire this is the accepted time to hold carnivale. It gives consistent time for brewers and other vendors to prepare for the next carnivale.
