Kappari

Kappari are mischievous creatures from the Natural World. There are many stories around Kappari from them falling in love with humans and living in harmony, to being outright evil and hunting humans for sport and eating their flesh.   Kappari are a medium humanoid creature with regular sized limbs. They have a turtle-like shell on their back which they may or may not be able to remove, some have clawed hands and feet, all vary in color and if they have scales or not based on the environment they frequent. Their face typically has a beak of some sort, some being hard while others are soft. These features look similar to the beaks of local sea turtles. Most Kappari also have curly hair on their heads. Some of the more rare and 'evil' Kappari have a hollow area on top of their head that legend says if you can knock all of the sake out of, they will fall asleep and when they awaken, will be your friend and behave within the normal confines of culture. (Some have even served as representatives within the Kings Court!)   Able to cast magic as well as work with other pieces of technology not normally seen within the material plane, they are capable of levels of trickery on other creatures that sometimes if gone unchecked, can lead to permanent injury and even accidental death.   One such incident with Kappari and an eastern village led to a local clan of Kappari being banished to one of the northern island areas.   One of the Kappari had recently returned from travels and brought back with them something that became called swine sickness. The local village had several pig farms and was a supplier for the king's court. The Kappari thought it would be funny to infect all of the pigs with only black fur with the virus, ruining their meat by having it melt when it was cooked. This melting would cause great heaps of flame on the cooking fires which none of the kitchens were designed for. These fires of course caught the buildings on fire and almost the entire village burned down.   Since this was an adolescent Kappari, he had bragged to his friends about what he had done, and was brought before the Kappari Elders to confess. The village and the Kappari clan elders voted together banish the Kappari clan further north for 100 years for punishment of ruining not only the local agriculture, the village buildings, and depriving the islanders of black pork, but also for causing hardship on the kings court as that years pork harvest was to be for a special event to celebrate the Ryukyuri people founding of their kingdom.
