Personal history
Lerissa’s origins are shrouded in ominous mystery. She was found by a high elf merchant traveler named Ellisar Glynmoira in the woods south of the city of Plecaster. While the thought of a toddler tiefling alone in the woods might be unsettling enough, fear and foreboding shadow the fact that she was found in the center of a magic circle drawn with fey runes and surrounded by the bodies of five Dryads. Lerissa sat silent and untouched amongst the carnage naked save a silver chain around her neck with a small black diamond.
Fearing for Lerissa’s safety, he scooped up the child and brought her to his home in Krevale where, after great debate with his wife, Myantha, he began to raise her as his own. Myantha, bitter about losing the argument to add the tiefling to their house and concerned over the effect it could have on their social rise, named the child Desdemona as a slight against her demonic visage.
Ellisar is a traveling merchant of great repute. He has seen much of the world and raised Lerissa with stories of distant lands and the extraordinary sights they hold. In later years, he traveled less and ran the business from the Krevale securing trade routes and sales of goods. He is a kind-hearted man who, while still savvy in business, mostly sees the good in people and has worked to raise Lerissa with the same virtues. Lerissa had immediately taken a fixation with the stories he returned home with involving magics from other lands. Ellisar fostered this love by learning and teaching her small tricks which she proved to be surprisingly adept at, ignoring a few minor ‘miss fires’ here and there. Lerissa’s warmest memories are of spending time with her father, laughing and learning. She loves him dearly.
Lerissa’s mother is the complete opposite of Ellisar. Publicly cold and calculating, she has an uncanny knack for finding the weakness in others and has used it well in maneuvering herself to positions of influence within Krevale’s ruling class. Her inherited wealth combined with the success of her husband's merchant business has kept the family in high status within the city, to the point of acquiring the titles of Lord and Lady Glynmoira. Having more access to and influence on Lerissa while Ellisar was traveling, she worked to instill the skills and values that she believed would overcome the stigma that her appearance brought to the family name. Her teachings work to instill the use of her charisma to glamour, distract, and deceive rivals to gain an advantage. Lerissa’s feelings for her mother are born more of respect and admiration than they are of the warmth and love she feels for her father. Those feelings have always been fueled by the desire to not disappoint or embarrass Myantha.
It is that desire that has led Larissa to where she finds herself now. Alone and half a continent away from the only family she has ever known. Eight years ago, at the age of 20, Lerissa’s mother assigned her a task like so many other times before. Extracting information, infiltrating rival households, obtaining leverage, all the usual markings of political intrigue and maneuverings that would allow the House Glynmoira to keep or extend its influence. Usually nothing of great law-breaking, and in fact, things that to a degree were almost expected and had become part of the game, so to speak, in Krevale politics. This task, while seemingly as 'innocent' as all the rest, took a terrible turn in the end. Lerissa had used one of the simple tricks of magic that her father had taught her, in order to gain access to the stores of the rival house. Something went terribly wrong as she lost control of the magic and it went wild, spilling fire out of her fingertips and bringing absolute ruin to the holdings of the rival house. In the aftermath, the rival ended up taking his own life, and his family was left on the streets. Lerissa, herself, was left in emotional and moral ruin. After a week of not eating as the formal investigation grew closer and closer to House Glynmoira, she was forced to flee the city at the behest of her mother. All of this, unfortunately, happened while her father was away on a now, rare business venture.
So, now she is on the run from her past. Though not in the literal sense. Myantha was able to dodge any of the blame and keep the position she had always held. Not by design, but by happenstance, the bulk of the scandal landed at Lerissa's feet and, unable to see another way out, her mother let it lie there. She left without being able to say goodbye to her father. And while she understands why her mother was forced to make the choice she did, she resents her both for the current state of her life and the soul-crushing absence of her father. She has been able to send him correspondence but has never felt safe enough to reveal where she was in order to hear back from him.
In the years of her flight, she has devoted more time to increasing her magical potential. Unfortunately, it has also brought to light the wild nature of her talents and unpredictable side effects using them brings. She yearns to increase and control her abilities and use them to gain enough wealth, power, and influence that she can return to Krevale without fear of her past.
As a precaution against pursuit, she has taken the name Lerissa while moving from city to city finding whatever jobs she can and putting actual sights to the places her father used to talk about.
