Lesaourel, Voice of the Divine Daughter

Born into Ilindith's most martial noble family, Lesaourel Quarivve was never much of a soldier. He made an effort to keep up appearances, but the tight discipline and rigorous training that the rest of his family thrived on only made the easily-distracted boy stick out that much more, and no amount of flogging or his superiors' ire seemed to correct it.   The one place Lesaourel excelled was fencing, and it mystified everyone. He never seemed to be fully paying attention during his lessons, yet few other students were able to best him with the rapier or sabre. What they didn't know and -- Lesaourel knew, would never understand -- was The Song. Lesaourel heard music constantly. No one else could hear it -- he came to appreciate that early on -- but he did, and heard it everywhere, even in his dreams where it was a soothing lullabye that restored body and soul. When he fenced, he could clear his mind and become one with The Song, letting it guide him as he moved to its ebbs and flows. He loved that feeling, and made up his mind that he would pursue it instead of his family's call to arms.   He spent every hour he coud muster learning to compose, to sing, to play instruments, to try to bring some fragment of The Song into the world where others could hear and benefit from it. He played and sang for anyone who would listen, but his favorite audience was always his dearest childhood friend Ilhane. She bore the violet eyes, the mark of divine sanction and a connection only those so-chosen could understand. It was a grave responsibility, even in childhood. But his songs brought levity and a few minutes of respite, and the way her violet eyes lit up with true joy always humbled him. It was as though Ilirinee herself were gazing upon him and smiling.   When he came of age, Lesaourel decided that he would leave Ilindith and take up the life of a bard, travelling among the cities of The Dark and singing its legends and lore. His Matron was chagrined; but by this point, even the upper ranks of the family had to admit that his talents lay in music and not in war. He recieved her blessing, and just as he was about to leave, the Divine Daughter died, and Ilhane asended to the city's highest seat of power. Her first act was to name Lesaourel as her choice for her Voice. The unsuspecting Lesarouel was frightened when the Ilirinee's Blades and their notoriously bloodthirsty commander showed up at House Quarivve looking for him. True terror set in, however, when he found out what they wanted.   Since that day, Lesaourel has been an unintentional paragon of Duty before Desire. He serves because his friend and his goddess called upon him to, yet he remains uncomfortable in a role he feels he neither belongs in nor deserves. A male has never held the role of Voice before. In fact, for a male to ascend so high a position is unheard of, and Lesarouel can see the thinly-veiled contempt and outrage in the eyes of the city's most powerful females whenever he speaks on Ilhane's behalf. The beauty of his voice makes his words difficult to ignore. The power of the Divine Daughter, the Church and Ilirinee herself behind it also makes ignoring his words unwise.

Touched by Divinity

Before he could fully be Ilhane's Voice, Lesarouel had to survive a long and excruciatingly painful ritual that opened his mind to hers. Ilhane and Lesaourel now share a telepathic bond that unites them so long as they are within 15 miles of one another. Lesaourel can hear Ilhane's thoughts as clearly as if she were standing beside him, and it is how she makes her wishes known to him. The two of them can hold entire conversations without a single physical word passed between them.

Personality

Lesaourel always presents as dignified and poised, but not altogether unapproachable. He seems to realize that while his role is of the highest importance, he is but a tool for something far greater. There is an unexpexted humility in his bearing that astounds everyone who chances to speak to him personally.   Everyone, that is, except Ilhane. Lesaourel is unaware of it, but these very qualities of character are the reason she chose him to help her carry the burden of her office.

Known Languages

Thanks to his interest in the bardic arts, Lesaourel is fluent in several languages: dark elven, sign, Common, Undercommon, Elven, Dwarven, Gnomish and Draconic.    Although he has never studied it and cannot speak it, he can inyermittently understand Celestial. This appears to be some kind of curious side effect from his binding to Ilhane. He has no control over when or how the ability surfaces or fades, and wouldn't mind losing it altogether if not for the extraordinary beauty of the sounds the language makes.

I wonder how different his life would have been if he had been able to become a bard like he wanted to. Really fascinating character.
