Stoneguard

The History of Stoneguard: A 400-Year Chronicle in Illyria's Althea Region

Year 0-100: The Rise from Rubble

Stoneguard's story began not as a powerful stronghold, but as a simple mining village named Altheston in the heart of Althea. The villagers mainly traded in rare minerals and precious gems. However, the village's strategic position between two major trade routes in Illyria drew the attention of invaders. The village was ransacked repeatedly, leading to its renaming as "Stoneguard" after villagers erected defensive stone walls, transforming their vulnerable hamlet into a fortress.

Year 100-200: The Age of Expansion

With protection from its walls, Stoneguard's influence grew. Its mineral wealth attracted traders from all corners of Illyria. The leaders, understanding the town's potential, began investing in infrastructure and expanding its borders. This century saw the establishment of the Corvash merchant family, who played a significant role in catapulting Stoneguard's economic status. Their trade routes, spanning across Illyria, brought immense wealth to the city.

Year 200-250: The First Siege

Stoneguard's prosperity became its very threat. Jealous of its mineral wealth, the neighboring city of Millpoint, under the banner of Lord Graveton, laid siege to Stoneguard. The siege lasted for three harrowing years. With the city's formidable defenses and the strategic leadership of the then young Austin Devereaux, Stoneguard managed to repel the invaders. The siege solidified Stoneguard's reputation as an impregnable fortress.

Year 250-300: The Renewal of Culture and Arts

Post-siege, Stoneguard entered a golden age. The city, now confident in its defenses, invested in arts, culture, and education. The grand Stoneguard Opera House was built, drawing performers from across the continent. The Devereaux family, ever patrons of the arts, established the famed Althea Academy, dedicated to magical arts and scholarly pursuits. This period is often dubbed as Stoneguard's "Renewal Era."

Year 300-350: The Treaty of Althea

Conflicts across the Althea region threatened to plunge it into chaos. Recognizing the need for peace, Baron Jakub Kavauchusv took a diplomatic lead. The Treaty of Althea, signed in Stoneguard, brought an unprecedented era of peace and cooperation amongst the warring cities. The treaty positioned Stoneguard not only as a trade and cultural hub but also as the political heart of the Althea region.

Year 350-390: The Industrial Evolution

With peace reigning, Stoneguard saw an influx of inventors, alchemists, and innovators. The city became the epicenter of technological advancements in Illyria. Steam-powered machines, improved mining equipment, and magical innovations changed the very fabric of the city. The skyline, once dominated by medieval towers, now showcased impressive factories and elegant steamworks.

Year 390-400: The Present Day

Stoneguard, a beacon of prosperity, arts, and innovation, stands tall amidst the Althea region's vast landscapes. While it faces challenges – from political intrigue to balancing its industrial growth with environmental concerns – the city remains an emblem of resilience and progress in Illyria. With Baroness Sophia Devereaux at the helm and the rich legacy of its past, Stoneguard looks forward to a promising future.
