Summer Camp 2021 Imaginaerium: Day 17

Hello everyone!
Ancient Aliens is a theory that has grown in popularity in our age, thanks to shows like those on the Discovery Channel. Unfortunately, it's about as accurate as flat earth, having its roots in basically mistranslations and someone making stuff up, and severe underestimation of our ancestors. Fortunately, I don't need to tell you all the way its wrong, because someone did that already!     It's on the long side, but interesting - both on its own, and for world building. Not only can some of the Ancient Aliens theory ideas be adapted for world building, but also how conspiracy theories or even frauds are constructed inside one of your settings... And how they spread. It's something that has become pretty relevant in recent years.   And when you're done that, here's a guy cleaning a dirty car. Strangely satisfying?
For today's Imaginaerium, we are going to peer into the brilliant minds of the Anvilites who are taking part of Summer Camp and see what advice they have for us. One of WA's greatest assets is its amazing community, so lets get better together.   Today, we're talking to the master of Hefflings; Heffé!

Tell us about yourself

I'm Heffe, writer & worldbuilder of the Hefflings and streamer.

What world are you working on for Summer Camp?

I'll be working on the Hefflings, though the world isn't actually called the Hefflings. The world name is about the adventuring party I'm to write stories about.   Eventually, it'll also be a campaign setting.

What is your past experience with Summer Camp?

My first Summer Camp was in 2019. I had high hopes and expectations to reach Gold, however, I remember I had a lot going on at that time and so I only managed to get Copper.   I was really kicking myself with this, as I really hoped I'd do more. So in 2020, I came back with vengeance with my first IronGorge challenge for Summer Camp; where I stream every day. Not only did I accomplish that, but I also managed to get Diamond; which I think made up for my disappointment.

What did you learn from the past Summer Camps?

  • You only need 300 words per article to "win".
  • You are not alone, WA has a huge community who can and will help you.
  • Burnout is illegal #BurnOutGetOut
  • How do you go about generating ideas for the prompts?

I first read all of the prompts, I then see how I can link them all together. I love doing this as it can make forming ideas easier AND it keeps the new content coherent and relatable.

What's your approach to this Summer Camp?

This time I *really* want to link all of the prompts together so they're in one cluster of articles. So I will be utilising my joy with looking for those links and brainstorming how they'll all fit in together.   I would also like to do more than I did last year. Last year I pretty much done a little more than the minimum. So about 500'ish words, depending on how my flow went. Doing this I've completely missed out the sidebar, which I have always struggled with in the past. I think I have a good method on tackling that, which I would love to practice too.   The method is to use the main body as the core content of the article, and the sidebar with relatable information which would also have an article.

What're your tricks for staying on track?

Mute & close Discord. I love the community, but hanging around in #summercamp-2021 isn't going to get you the words you need for your badge. Discord words don't count towards Summer Camp... if only.

How do you handle those bad days when we get stuck or can't seem to get writing done?

#BurnOutGetOut   Prepare for these off days, and use the momentum from the good days to do enough to cover those bad days. Also allow for downtime; especially if you have other things going on too.
Many thanks to Heffé to joining us today :D
And finally, here's some music to keep you company while you write:
The idea of divine inspiration and an aha moment is largely a fantasy. Anything of value comes from hard work and unwavering dedication. If you want to be a good artist you need to look at other artists, make a lot of crappy art, and just keep working.
