Summer Camp 2022 - Day 6

Hello everyone!
Continuing with the theme of geography, today lets talk about seasons and how they can change a place.

by EuroNews

As the seasons change, so does the character of a region. From sveltering heat to blinding blizzards, from fungal blooms that choke the air with spores to angry moonlight searing the earth, the way we interact with the land changes drastically as the planet turns. And because we're worldbuilding, the meaning of season can be greatly expanded.

What are the seasons in your setting? Are they natural, artificial, or magical?

How do they affect the region's climate, temperature, and weather?

Or, if there are no seasons / the differences negliable, what does that mean for those who live there?

Example:
Some places become inaccessible when winter comes; Russia, famously, has a problem with having most of it's port unusable for most of the year due to the cold and ice. The entire Donner Party calamity happened because the party missed a narrow gap in time before snowfall, and got stuck. How does the coming of the season change how the people in your setting interact with the region?

Does trade slow or stop during difficult season?

How have people attempted to adapt? Do they move, or circumvent the dangers?

How has the changing seasons marked the cultures of the people who live in or around the region?

With magic or advanced technology close enough to mimic it, people's ability to deal with or even manipulate seasons increase - to various degrees of going horribly wrong. I remember one old fantasy novel where the mages were never supposed to mess with weather, because it lead to such far-reaching, unintended consequences.

What are some of the technologies or magics that have been invented to deal with effects of the season?

How is magic (or technologies) affected by the changing seasons?

How do the animals, magical beasts, and other critters of your region deal with or change by the seasons?

Together with weather, geographic region become living things, with different temperaments across the year, and shifting dangers - and stories - to build into your setting.   And now, some more random stuff!
