Personal history
CW: slavery
Corus Novasath was born in the cold northern sea far from Falondis. He spent his early years training and fighting in the harsh waters, living by the whims of the storms and waves. It was a harsh, but relatively peaceful existence, until pirates began using the stormy waters as a smuggling route. Corus and his family spent several months violently reprimanding the sea brigands, but their own numbers were too few and the pirates too well-armed. In the end, the surviving tritons were rounded up and sold into slavery. A powerful fighter and impossible to control, particularly near water, Corus was sent almost immediately across the ocean to be sold into the fighting pits of Sumethra, a desert nation known for anarchy and violence. The arena that bought Corus thought it hilarious that a triton, a noble denizen of of the deep, had fallen so low and so far from home. With little else to do, Corus fought, and trained, and slaughtered in the fighting pits. His water magic was stifled in the Sumethren dry heat, but he learned to kick up windstorms in the arena, blinding his foes and decimating all who were sent against him. As his popularity grew, Corus became more than a oddity, and was well on his way to becoming a champion when he bought his own contract and freed himself. He was no longer a slave, but now made a living for himself through blood drenched performance. Those who attended his matches always left awed and respectful, comparing Corus to the greatest champions of legend. Still, the distant whispers of the waves called to Corus, and increasingly more often he found himself wandering the docks at night, dipping his bare feet in the water and dreaming of cold spray on his face. Eventually, the dreams became too tempting and Corus booked passage back to his home waters, hoping perhaps to find any remaining family that had survived. When he found none, he was disheartened and set adrift, unwilling to return to the glory he left behind in Sumethra, but equally unsure of any other skills he may have had. Corus wanted nothing more than to meet a triton female and start rebuilding the family that he'd lost. So he wandered, telling stories, fighting for money, and searching, always searching for a place and reason to live. Long years of wanderlust took him south, over the Shatterspine Mountains and into Falondis. It was there that he found the Tempest Marsh and the reclusive lizardfolk that called it home. The lizardfolk introduced Corus to the purpose he had been searching for: the goddess Melora. Patron of the seas, storms, nature, and the wild, Melora called to Corus, much like the waves had called him home from Sumethra. With his calling in life identified, Corus travelled with purpose to the city of Falon, serving Melora and ministering to the people about the importance of preserving nature as he went. Upon arriving in Falon, Corus joined the tiny temple to Melora and became both a healer and staunch advocate for the wild from within the heart of the city. However, every year he shed his peaceful paladin exterior and revisited his roots as a gladiator in the Royal Tourney. There, he met Prince Edmund de Falondis, newly come-of-age, who was entering his first ever grand melee. When Corus defeated the prince with impressive panache, Edmund (as well as the spectators, and even the King) was awed. Edmund insisted on lessons and their friendship was solidified. Corus and Edmund became very close, though Edmund’s frequent visits to the temple of Melora over the years were frowned upon by the populace who favored progress over preservation. Corus was by Edmund’s side during the Falondan-Corvinian War, serving in the Medical Corps, and followed him home when the brutal fighting was over. For the next 20 years, Corus and Edmund were the best of friends and the closest of confidants. Corus was one of the very few who knew that King Levondel was sick, and was at the palace when he passed. He stood by his friend through the questions, the suspicion, and the difficult months when accusations of treachery were thrown about openly. When Princess Euna returned with her fiancé and Edmund was ousted from his reluctant position as regent, Corus remained by his side, as loyal and committed to his friend as he is to his goddess.
