Aquitania

A region that approximately covers the southern part of Saliens. Also known as Occitania, the region where Occitan/Provençal/Langue d'Oc is spoken and the predominant cultural group.   The troubadours originated in the area at the eastern coast and spread throughout the rest of the Mediterranean, but especially gained much popularity in the rest of Aquitania.   Managed to remain an independent country until conquest by the emperor ("Napoleon") after the revolutions in northern/middle Saliens. They were experiencing a period of not unrelated economic turmoil at the time, which had made them vulnerable. Attempts were made to ally with their linguistic and cultural neighbours in and south of the mountains, but as "Spain" initially allied itself with Aquitania's new emperor, these attempts were discovered and stamped out by both Saliens and "Spain". Although "Britain" assisted "Spain" and "Portugal" in ridding themselves of the Emperor, their relations with Aquitania were historically bad and they were happy to see them conquered.   The area west and south of the river coming out of Santes and east of the other river (more or less "Provençal" region) have their own cultural subgroups, but the language is shared with the main differences between the regions being pronunciation. This is also what enabled the region to have a central administration with documents understood by all its literate citizens.
