Timaios

Timaios (a.k.a. Tim)

Timaios was an explorer and cartographer from Melagga who lived from 392 BR to 256 BR. Although the originals were eventually lost, copies of many of his maps have survived even into the 20th century. The Immortals (who were with four at the time) met him after his return from his expedition down the Iter river while he was still creating his famous maps of the Iter. They encountered him several times and he assisted them occasionally. For their part, they were extremely curious about his travels as they had never gone that far south and it seemed unlikely that they ever would.   Even after completing his maps of the Iter, a highly respected work after which most people expected him to retire as he was nearing his forties, Timaios continued to set out on expeditions. Some of these were further explorations of the Iter delta but he also went further afield, both to the west and northeast. Although the maps resulting from these journeys are less famous, they are highly prized by historians and geographers alike.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Timaios is the first known person to have mapped the course of the Iter river all the way to one it's great lakes far south. He also documented that this could not be the source of the river, but he was unable to afford further travel at the time. He returned to the north of Melagga, correcting and expanding many of his notes and maps during the return journey. It took him several years to complete his work after coming home. Most of the back channels of the Iter were not explored by himself but are drawn by local inhabitants or based on their descriptions. A clear effort has been made to identify the sources of information - many names are noted down next to the channels, but it is often unclear whether the name refers to a person or a people or is merely the name of the tributary. Later scholars were usually unable to find local inhabitants or even the channels based on the notes, although in some cases they have succeeded in identifying a source.
