An arcanist can only be born due to the strict qualifications magic places on magic users. For one, the person must have Eclipse Affinity to wield both Solar and Lunar magics. Secondly, they must have a strong enough soul to use arcane magics. Finally, they need the condition called Fracture, the ability to use death magic. This is all that is needed and with enough time devoted to studying they can be come an arcanist .

Purpose

This depends on who you ask, but in a general sense, their focus of study is the interactions between magics. Due to their unique ability to use all the other magics, they can see and feel the connections between them and use that to their advantage when casting. While they can never be masters of any one magic, they can master these connections.

Social Status

In the magic community, they disrespected due to their Arcanist Guild which has represented them for a few hundred years, and their lack of magical control. The magic community believes in control and mastery over magic, but arcanist break this idea, but examining it's flow and balance. As a result, they a typically shunned them the community.
In the world community, they a very respected due to their versatile skill set and unique abilities. Since most magic is studied in one field, a magic user that can cast and understand all six is universally helpful for the small scale problems of today. Rarely do you need a master wizard of the arcane arts to solve a problem and if they were needed, The Academy would deal with the situation.

The name "Arcanist" has only been used in the past thousand years. On the magic timescale, this wold be a extremely short period of time. Typically they were refereed to as "Magically Gifted" or "Magic Blessed." They were seen as wonders to behold and many would occur great political and magical power over lifetimes. However, many were bent towards corruption, and as a result, many were hunted and killed to avoid such power being unleash on the world. However, as the Aulus Imperium rose this assault began to weaken to the point of public acceptance. With their power now consolidated in the Arcanist Guild, this has been unprecedented for them for the past thousand years.
