The Scar

We had to recover the new guy today. Got overconfident and didn't perform a harness check. Was given the same training as anyone else but felt he needed to keep up with the experienced spicers. A few broken bones but it doesn't seem like there are any deadly internal injuries. He will be back on the job after he's healed up. Every spicer learns this lesson one way or another.
Spice Supervisor's Report

A Wound in the World

The Scar is a huge chasm that defines the border between the Parchland and Greenburrow. It is known for the rare minerals that are mined from within and for the spices that grow on the sides. Both of these are valuable materials but require traveling part-way down the Scar or to the bottom and into the offshoot caves.   This has been an economic boon for the Parchland - on top of the export of salt - but the Greenburrow side of the chasm has remained undeveloped.

The Claw of Gurgaramata

When the Aerean Ascetics performed the Rite of Mon-Aere, they banished the Gurgaramata but as it was pushed from the world it grabbed the earth in an attempt to refute the rite. The beast's action was futile and it was unable to resist the power of the spell. However, it tore the world in its attempt to hold on leaving the Scar.   It is believed by some that the ore veins in the Scar are formed from the blood of the Gurgaramata and that the spice plants that thrive there only do so because it is where the monster breathed its last breath.

Scouts and Spicers

Mining is the safest occupation within the Scar. This is less about the mining conditions and more about the other jobs performed. The scouts search out undiscovered parts of the Scar and encounter unforeseen dangers. The spicers rappel down the sides in search of rare plants of high value. Meanwhile the miners are able to use a well established lift to go down and return as well as use the routes forged by scouts to arrive at mining sites.
