Spirits
Spirits are souls - either condensed or loose - that have been mutated upon the death of the host. The spirit functions as a traditional spirit or "ghost" would: "haunting" areas, moving objects while unseen, and generally sometimes just believing they're still alive.
Demons do not have a lot of use for spirits, as a lot of them just see them as a trade item gone bad. Some more malevolent demons use them as a cover for possessing or haunting humans. Some fae are created through a spirit being exposed to certain fae magic, or fae influenced areas such as Leylines. An example of this would be an Undine, a soul or new spirit that was drawn into Fae Water or water within an area of fae influence, and becoming a subspecies of fae themselves.
Poltergeists are stronger spirits, ones who have a more present idea of humanity or emotion about them.

Additional Information
Average Intelligence
Most spirits are as intelligent as they were when they were alive. However, due to to trauma of their death or other circumstances spirits can often display a less than average type of intelligence, reacting to stimuli in a bestial or feral kind of way. This is mostly due to a loss of the sense of self, something that can either anchor a spirit or cause it to disappear.
