Thunderous Arrival
She's sitting on the balcony, in the rain, watching the thunder and lightning. Her red hair is dark from the water, rippling around her wings into puddles around her and clothes sticking to her body. I can almost imagine her wild smile with every flash of lightning and crack of thunder. Lightning dances around her fingers and wings, she is really happy. My mistress of storms.
She lies down, staring straight up at the sky. The storm is getting worse, rain coming down harder and lightning getting more violent. The thunder is getting even louder. Her hair streams around her, the puddles carrying out the lengths. A flash of lightning strikes the courtyard, shaking the ground. She sits up sharply, pushing herself up to her knees then struggling to her feet. I watch her walk to the rail, glancing down at where the lightning struck, then returns to where she was lying down, getting comfortable watching the storm from the ground.
I walk out to join her, sitting at her side. Her hand runs along her belly, clearly thinking about the little one soon to arrive. I place my hand on her belly, feeling our child move around inside.
"Tonight." She whispers, just barely above a whisper. "The contractions are getting closer and closer. It won't be long before my water breaks."
I lift her up gently, holding her to my chest. Her hand stays on her belly. "I hope the thunder doesn't frighten our baby."
I kiss her. "With you as our child's mother, I doubt that. You're not afraid of storms and will calm the baby whenever the storm bothers their sleep. And as the little one grows, you will teach them that there's nothing to be afraid of."
She smiles, lightly kissing me back, just as another clap of thunder causes me to jump. She winces and laughs at the same time, then gets a funny look on her face. Her hand moves down, then she looks up at me.
"Right, help me in please." I pull her to her feet and walk her inside. She busys herself with getting dry and change into other clothes. "Might you send for the midwife. It's time."
