Groetus
Once the second moon of Iotelos, Groetus was transformed into the god of apocalypse and doom. Pushed away by the gods of Iotelos after The Arcanaclysm, Groetus hangs in the sky above The Boneyard, watching the passage of souls. Every year, on the longest night, he returns to the material plane, his skull like visage staring at the realm as he passes over.
Groetus has never knowingly interacted with his followers, directly or indirectly. Those that do worship him either hold no power, or their power comes from a means other than faith.
Groetus looks like a regular moon, but the surface that faces Iotelos looks like a skull pushing up from beneath the rock. Prior to The Arcanaclysm, this rocky face did not exist. Scholars have found no other known differences in appearance between Groetus and the original moon.
The Long Night is the name given to the shortest day of the year, when Groetus returns from the boneyard to orbit Iotelos, watching silently from above. Different kingdoms and cultures deal with this in different ways. People from Izmir, for example, will launch colorful fireworks from their homes, as an act of defiance. Those close by in the Weeping Lands will snuff out all the lights that they have and remain indoors away from windows, trying to not draw the ire of another unpredictable and evil god.
Followers of Groetus may bang drums or ring bells outside the homes of others, foretelling the end times. In bigger cities these followers may be moved on or arrested, but smaller villages and hamlets may be disturbed by the cacophony of noises for the entire night.
Prior to the Arcanaclysm the second moon of Iotelos was known as ____________. When The Arcanaclysm occurred, the face of a skull was observed gradually forming on the surface of the moon. Over time, Groetus drew closer and closer to Iotelos, as weird phenomena started to occur. Tides would rise unnaturally high during the night when Groetus was visible, and the air would become unnaturally cold. It wasn't until The Divine Council used their power to imprison him in the Boneyard that the phenomena began to cease. Now, it is only on the longest night of the year that he escapes his prison and glares at the world.
